Preparing for an appointment

Visiting a homeopath is very different from visiting a GP, a naturopath or specialist doctor. Just in case you have never seen a homeopath before or had constitutional appointment with a classical homeopath, I’m going to explain a bit about the appointment: such as, what to expect, the sort of information that is important and what happens after the appointment.

What to expect

The first appointment goes for around 2 hours. The clinic room is safe place. It is different from the outside world. The social rules that apply to society do not apply in clinic. This means if you feel like crying, yelling, venting or even being silent, please do it. Everything said in the clinic room is private and confidential.

What we are looking for

In clinic, we are trying to work out how your body is trying to heal itself by collecting information about what your body is doing on every level. We are looking for information about your everyday life, conditions you have had, are suffering from and the things your body does when you are not consciously in control of it. These are the times the deeper self comes to the surface. We see it in dreams, the way we perceive the world, the things want to do, in physical symptoms and their patterns, in the way we feel pain, in our words, in the food we crave, the times we wake, the way the body feels, it’s desires, it’s revulsions, it’s oddities, in times of stress and what makes you happy.

Some of the symptoms and phrases that may be ignored by other professionals which are vitally important to us are:-

Biting your tongue when going to sleep

Craving for fried pickles

Dreaming that your children are going to drown, again and again

Sleeping with your right arm above your head

Waking at 2am and going back to sleep at 5am

It is like he has victim stamped on his forehead

I don’t like confrontation.

He is the life of the party

What do we do with this information

We then collate the information together and use computer software to match the symptom set with 3000+ drug profiles. Many of these symptom profiles are quite similar and so it can be very difficult to get an exact match from just the first appointment. It can take up to four or five interviews to get a match strong enough to trigger ‘Hering’s Direction of Cure’. This means the time in between appointments is very important.

The way we work out how close the match is is by looking for changes. We need to know if your symptoms have improved, if they have gotten worse or if you have had new symptoms after taking the remedy. This is why we give patient’s a form to write down the changes experienced with each dose.

What to expect

If the selected drug is a really close match we expect old symptoms, illness and thoughts to briefly return and then your overall health, strength and vitality to improve as the remedy triggers a process we call “Hering’s Direction of Cure”.

Pre-interview questionaire

Before the appointment we have a few questionnaires for you to fill in. This will take an hour or two.

This questionnaire will cover legal and privacy issues as well as asking for details such as your parents, siblings and grandparents histories, past illnesses, medical interventions, main concern (why you booked the appointment), food cravings, how you feel in different weather conditions, your dreams and much more.

Privacy agreement

Before the appointment you will be given a privacy agreement which will cover whether or not you would like the appointment recorded for the homeopaths use only, how you would like to communicate email/phone, etc. It is vital this is signed before your appointment.
